The Basics of Dachshund Training

Dachshunds are one of the most popular breed of dogs and one of the most loved. They are admirable because of their strong independence and capability to make decisions on their own. It is these strong traits that set them apart from other breeds but these traits are also the reason on why dachshund training can be a little difficult. Patience, firmness and consistency are the core values that one must have to be able to train a dachshund effectively.

The most effective way of dachshund training is by enrolling them in obedience school. This will benefit you and your dog as it teaches not only the dog but also the owner. The basic lessons that will be taught is how to control your dog and at the same time, get your dog to respond to your commands. Enrolling in obedience school will give both the dog and the owner a much deeper understanding of each other. Before you enroll in one, it is advised to interview the instructor or review the course to check if it covers all the lessons you want.

For you to be able to carry out dachshund training effectively, you have to be persistent. Being persistent while training your dog before and after obedience school is needed to make him respond and listen to you. If your dog ignores you or is not in the mood to listen, don’t let him get away with it. Keeping it simple on commands and methods of teaching is also advised as well as consistency. Changing commands and methods of teaching may confuse your dog. It will also slow down the learning process and in the end make it harder for the both of you.

An effective way to keep your dog interested in learning is by giving small bits of food or treats when they obey you or are doing well. You also have to give positive reinforcement and give praises and affection when they are on the right track. This way, your dog will be able to know if you are pleased or not and if they did something you dislike, creating a negative association would send the message to your dog that you don’t like what the dog just did. Avoid sending mixed messages that your dog may not comprehend. Again, keep it simple and be consistent.

Dachshund training is easier done with a puppy than an adult dog. Starting the training as early as possible is highly recommended as an adult dog can be more difficult to train and can be nearly impossible to do. However, when starting early, you have to be careful for the dog not to hate training as it will be very hard to correct. Making the training fun and entertaining is a must if you want the dog to stick to the program.

Pacing is also important on dachshund training. No matter how we want our dogs trained right away, we have to pace with them and not rush with the training. We have to understand that training is a slow and steady process but rewarding at the end
